Skype doesn't actually delete these messages when it stops showing them. As long as you still have access to the Skype account on which you had the conversation and haven't manually deleted your.

[Tutorial] Download Skype Video Messages

Hi guys,

I've spent a bit of time today trying to figure out how to download Skype video-messages, since the app itself is horrible and won't let you. It seems from a search that it's a common complaint, and nobody had any answers, beyond using third party tools which always make me a bit concerned.

I figured out how to do it myself though, so thought I'd share and hope it helps someone else:

1. Play the video message in Skype

2. While the video buffer is still loaded, switch to iFile

3. Find the Skype database: main.db

Mine was here:

4) Open main.db in SQLite3 Editor (this is already in iFile)

5) Open the 'VideoMessages' table

6) Scroll to vod_path column of the latest record, copy the URL

7) Open the URL in your browser, and download from there (I used 'Chrome Downloader+' to grab from Chrome)

8) Delete Skype and convince friends to use Telegram :p

edit: just in case it's relevant, I did all this on iPhone 6, iOS 8.4, with the latest version of Skype.

In the mean time, try to uninstall and reinstall your Skype app and see if the recording will reach up to 3 minutes after reinstalling.

I tried uninstalling Skype today from my friend's laptop. Found 2 versions, uninstalled them both, and installed version 8.25.0.5. Still having the same problem.

What now?

Me too. It used to allow me 3 minutes, but the new version only allows 20 seconds. I actually discovered this problem a few months ago, so I went back to the old version. But now I understand it will be phased out, so I'm back on the new version. Why 20 seconds only? Plus, on the mobile app, it updated itself and also has 20 seconds, and I must hold the capture button the whole time I'm recording - which is awkward.

Hence, both desktop and mobile app seem limited to 20 second video messages. Argh?

The 20 sec limit is still present in the latest 8.27.0.85 update.
