I've even used the ISO file on my personal MacBook to stand up Windows. In this article we will be formatting a USB flash drive with a bootable ShadowProtect recovery environment much the way you might create a bootable ShadowProtect CD/DVD. The StorageCraft Recovery Environment and ShadowProtect are both part of the StorageCraft Recover-Ability™ solution. This solution provides you with all the products and services you need to protect and recover data, applications, and systems anytime, anywhere, and from any disaster.

As any seasoned IT professional knows, disasters happen and business needs change. The StorageCraft Recovery Environment gives you the ability to back up systems, restore to different hardware or to virtual machines, and migrate to a new physical or virtual environment. Additionally, the StorageCraft Recovery Environment includes utilities to aid swift recovery such as auto-repair and diagnostics.

StorageCraft offers two recovery environment options:

One of the first things you need to do when you buy StorageCraft ShadowProtect backup and disaster recovery software is to create a recovery disk. This is really important if you downloaded your software and didn't order a media kit. It may seem unnecessary. But if you have a system crash and no recovery disk, you’ll wish you’d created one ahead of time.

Why do you need a recovery disk? It’s a fundamental part of the way disk-based disaster recovery software works. Many times you can’t boot the system you’re trying to restore. So you need to boot from a recovery disk to restore that system. If you’re using ShadowProtect for your backups, you need a recovery disk that has the StorageCraft Recovery Environment on it. That’s because you’re not just restoring data, you’re recovering your entire system. If you’re going to restore to the same hardware, you’re essentially wiping out all of the information on the disk. You’re starting all over again after deleting everything—operating system, applications, and all the data. This is called bare metal recovery. If you’re going to restore to brand new hardware you’ll need StorageCraft Hardware Independent Restore technology. And that’s inside the StorageCraft Recovery Environment. In that case you need to use your recovery disk to move your ShadowProtect backup image to a brand new system.

7 Steps total

Step 1: Understand the options StorageCraft gives you for creating your recovery disk.

When you bought ShadowProtect, StorageCraft listed some downloads available for the StorageCraft Recovery Environment:

1. Option One is the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder (application)
2. Option Two is the StorageCraft Recovery Environment CrossPlatform 32-bit (ISO file)
3. Option Three is the StorageCraft Recovery Environment CrossPlatform 64-bit (ISO file)

The StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder allows you to create a Windows-based recovery disk. It uses with Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) to do this. So if you use the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder, you need to do some extra work. First of all you need to download Windows PE, which is included in the Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). Although it is free, the file is about 2 GB. So it may take some time to download, depending on your speeds and feeds. You’ll also need to have the .NET 3.5 framework installed. (NOTE: Currently, Microsoft requires you to download the .NET 4.0 framework when you download the Windows ADK. Essentially this means you will need to download both the .NET 3.5 and the .NET 4.0 frameworks.)

Fortunately, the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder walks you through all the steps necessary to create the StorageCraft Recovery Environment for Windows.

The second and third options for creating your recovery disk don’t need any preparation. Whether you choose the 32-bit or 64-bit option (or both) the StorageCraft Recovery Environment CrossPlatform is already built for you. You can burn the bootable .ISO file directly to a CD. It’s built on Linux technology, but it can be used to recover Windows systems.

So where do you start?

Step 2: Download ShadowProtect and the StorageCraft Recovery Environment.

Once you accept the End User License Agreement, you’ll land on the StorageCraft Recovery Environment software download page, where you get to make some choices. You can decided to download all, or any one of the recovery environment options.

Step 3: Download Windows ADK to Create a Windows PE - based recovery environment.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the download of the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder. Run the ReBuilder_Setup application, which installs it on your system. Then the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder will be in the StorageCraft file in your Programs menu. Don’t have Windows PE or the .NET 3.5 framework on your system yet? No problem! The StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder will walk you through downloading and installing them.

Step 4: Create a Windows PE based recovery environment.

Once you've downloaded Windows PE and the .NET3.5 framework, all you need to do is choose “Recovery Environment” as your Output Product Type in the StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder. Then choose your language. And make sure you take note of the file you’re choosing as your ISO Output Directory. If you want to pre-load any drivers, you can. Click on the add driver icon at the top. Then you can add them in the Additional Recovery Environment Drivers box.

Now all you need to do is click the green arrow. The StorageCraft Recovery Environment Builder will build your custom recovery environment.

When it’s done, the Write Recovery Environment Media dialogue will pop up. You can choose to burn a CD or burn the .ISO to a USB thumb drive. Load a blank CD into your CD/DVD drive or connect an empty USB drive and click Burn. Now you have your own disk with the StorageCraft Recovery Environment for Windows.

Step 5: Use the StorageCraft Recovery Environment for Windows.

You can boot from this disk (or USB drive) when you need to recover an entire system, or restore a ShadowProtect backup image file to new hardware.

Step 6: Create a bootable recovery disk with StorageCraft Recovery Environment - CrossPlatform.

If you’re planning to use the StorageCraft Recovery Environment CrossPlatform (32-bit or 64-bit), browse to the folder where you saved your download file. Click on the RE-CrossPlatform file. Load a blank CD into your CD/DVD drive, and click Burn.

Step 7: Use the StorageCraft Recovery Environment - CrossPlatform.

You can also boot from this disk if you need to recover an entire system or restore a ShadowProtect backup image to new hardware.

No matter which way you decide to go with your StorageCraft recovery disk, we always recommend that you test every part of your recovery plan. So make sure you test your recovery disk too. Now you’re ready if disaster strikes.

    Very useful how-to. I always keep a rescue disc around, it is one thing that seems to be forgotten when configuring a backup solution, though just keeping an ISO around has helped since virtualization is becoming the norm.

    Thanks for posting this, Laura!
    I used the Recovery Environment Builder application to build my own WinPE-based Recovery Environment with an option to add custom hardware drivers right into the RE. It's a 'must have' tool for my lab and especially my P2V projects. I've even used the ISO file on my personal MacBook to stand up Windows boxes in VMware Fusion. Worked like a champ!
